Hollow Hog Demo Day

Hollow Hog Demo Day

On the 9th May Mid Macquarie Landcare hosted a demonstration of the Hollow Hog habitat creation tool at Bodangora in partnership with Mitchell Creek Mining Company.

Approximately 18 people gathered on a windy hillside on the 9th May to watch Matt Stephens demonstrate his unique Hollow Hog machine as he created new habitat hollows in an isolated White Box Woodland remnant.

The crowd included environmental consultants looking at ways to add value to habitat restoration projects, Landcare staff and volunteers researching rehabilitation techniques for wildlife habitat, developers looking at best practice approaches to incorporating environmental management into their organisations and offsetting impacts.

Mitchell Creek Mining and Alkane General Manager, Mike Sutherland was on hand to share with the group how Alkane are using the Hollow Hog technique across their projects to provide as much habitat opportunity as possible for native wildlife into the landscape surrounding their mining projects.

On the day, arborists were present creating a parrot hollow and a microbat hollow directly into a standing tree. Matt also demonstrated the use of the tool to create hollows from fallen logs that can be strapped to trees and posts.

Neighbouring landowner, Iberdrola (Bodangora Wind Farm) Site Manager Michael Bullock also discussed their current project which aims to encourage native quolls back onto the landscape by providing articificial dens in appropriate locations.
