Matt Stephens will demonstrate the use of his hollow hog tool and provide information about:
- natural hollows, our understanding of their prevalence in the landscape and their role in ecological functioning including hollows within standing trees, fallen timber and within snags in watercourses.
- the range of fauna that use hollows in the landscape.
- the latest information about hollow characteristic with specific examples of how the parameters influence fauna usage. This discussion will include research that has been completed, areas where further research is underway and areas where more research is still required.
- tree morphology / tree growth, how hollows form naturally within trees and how we can mimic this process through carving new hollows.
- What we have learned over the past 4 years of carving hollows and how best to install them to maximise benefits to wildlife.
