We’ve been blessed with some beautiful warm sunny days recently and last Saturday was no exception. 

It was just the day for Mid Macquarie Landcare to launch a new initiative, Wellington Rivercare.

The group’s call out for volunteers was rewarded by 10 people who turned up during mid-morning ready to volunteer their services for the benefit of the Bell River environment. 

Landcare coordinator Deb Cooke said the group was asking volunteers to participate once a month .

“Rivercare is an initiative of Mid Macquarie Landcare and we are calling for volunteers to join us once a month to work on the riparian zone of the Bell River,” she said.

The work involves litter collection and bush regeneration. She said the group just wanted to look after this incredible stretch of the Bell River running through town that separates our two lovely parks, Cameron Park on the east bank and Pioneer on the western side. 

“Volunteers don't need bush regeneration skills as we will teach you. This area is such an asset to Wellington.”

“And as people may know this is platypus habitat which is also incredibly special.”

M Cooke said she thought there were a lot of people who felt that they would like to help restore this area. 

When asked what other projects were coming up, she said they had a lot going on this year. 

“We will be conducting an edible weeds workshop in the park identifying which weeds are in fact edible on Tuesday, September 8,” she said. “This will give a very different perspective on weeds.”

Another weeds related workshop will be held in November finding special weeds from which to make personal products to exhibit,” she said. 

“I’m sure the more the community becomes aware of what we are about, our membership will build. It doesn’t take a lot of volunteers to make a difference.”
