Salinity is a significant issue in Central West NSW, affecting agricultural productivity and native vegetation.

While salt is a natural part of the landscape, the clearing of trees in the past and a lack of understory vegetation has caused changes in the amount of surface water runoff, the rate of groundwater recharge and discharge, evapotranspiration (the amount of water taken up by vegetation), and soil water evaporation from bare soil. All these factors have an impact on the amount of salt in the soil, and the amount of salt entering waterways and moving to other areas.

If you have an area of bare or wet ground where nothing much seems to grow, it could be a saline patch.

Landcare can visit your property and assess the site, and make management recommendations to reduce the saline site symptoms and and restore productivity of the area.

We will be carrying out site visits in the Narromine area in August 2025.

If interested, please fill in this FORM and we will contact you to arrange a visit to your property.

The full extent of salinity across the Central West is not known, and by being part of this project, not only are you restoring the health and productivity of your land, you are also enabling landscape-wide understanding of the problem and what can be done to improve the land and waterways.

This project is funded by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, and is also made possible by the NSW Landcare Enabling Program - a collaboration between Local Land Services and Landcare NSW supported by the the NSW Government.
