Boost to NRM engagement and on-ground activities in the Riverina

A series of ‘how to’ workshops and on ground projects has delivered positive education outcomes and support to Landcare groups in the Riverina.

Capacity to Deliver - LP011-014

The issue

In recent years Murrumbidgee Landcare groups and staff have noted a decline in the opportunities for the uptake of natural resource management education and on-ground activities in the region. As is the ongoing nature of Landcare membership, group members retire and new members join up, and this creates an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge of Landcare and community members.

The solution

In conjunction with Riverina Local Land Services, Murrumbidgee Landcare’s Capacity Building project was created to facilitate interesting and relevant workshops and on-ground projects. These were aimed at increasing the capacity for natural resource management activities in the region and were designed to suit the interests and requirements of member groups in their particular region.

This was achieved by delivering numerous workshops including, seed collection and propagation, a multi-day soil boot camp, low-stress stock handling and on-ground works including paddock tree planting and establishment of habitat for Glossy Black Cockatoos.

The impact

By building involvement and awareness of environmental issues in the broader community, the capacity building project had a substantial level of interest and enthusiasm evident by a strong overall attendance. Despite COVID-19 restrictions a total of 12 events have taken place, with over 200 people attending.

It is hoped the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm gained through this project will ensure the longevity and engagement of grass roots natural resource management continues to thrive in the Riverina.
