Discover the Art of Nature: Where Creativity Meets Conservation in the Riverina

Observing and documenting nature

Community Participation - LEP23_036_LLC7_2

The issue

Parental fears about safety and injury, restricted access to natural environments, and the lure of electronic devices contribute to children spending less time outdoors. These reasons and more are contributors to a disconnect between children and nature.

The solution

So, we invited people into the nursery to engage in this personalised experience. We provided an opportunity and the space for children to slow down, disconnect from technology and connect with nature. We provided a chance for children and parents to spend valuable time together. We also aimed to promote the nursery and expand our customer base through the exposure this event created.

The impact

We were able to provide the space for deeper connections between the participants and their natural surroundings. Children and adults alike developed new skills in observation and artistic expression, creating lasting memories of the Riverina's flora. Both parents and children participated, talking and comparing creations along the way. We also introduced the nursery to new community members, while they formed connections with each other.

It was a great workshop with participants, presenters and employees embracing the opportunity to create some beautiful artworks!

Learnings

The hands-on approach and expert guidance from Melissa Martin proved effective in engaging participants. However, the low attendance and supervision issues highlighted the need for better communication of requirements and potentially stricter enforcement of the adult accompaniment rule. Future workshops could benefit from more targeted marketing and clearer expectations for attendees.
