From little things, big things grow

Coolamon Landcare works with peri-urban landholders

The issue

The areas surrounding the Coolamon township are increasingly being converted from native vegetation and agricultural land to large residential blocks and small farms, known collectively as peri-urban properties. Landholders in these areas typically do not obtain a living from their property, so are not an integrated part of the wider farming community, nor the landcare community for that matter. However the size of their land holdings means they have a significant opportunity to impact on the natural resources of our landscape.

The solution

The Coolamon Landcare Group are working with five peri-urban landholders to revegetate their small properties and install nest boxes in the absence of hollows. Individually, these landholders possess <15ha, however collectively their planting potential exceeds 50ha. This is a pilot project with the intention to offer the project to more peri-urban landholders over the coming years.

The impact

By helping peri-urban landholders to be involved in caring for their environment we are empowering peri-urban landholders to implement sustainable land management practices. The “from little things, big things grow" pilot project was funded by the Regional Landcare Facilitator pop-up grants. This investment has increased participation of small landholders in landcare activities and, through that, has helped to strengthen the native vegetation corridor networks in Coolamon area.
