The issue

There were limited activities happening in the region between the Local Landcare Coordinator and the community that involved including the urban community in land care. The LLC was approached by a community member to see if there could be a practical tree pruning workshop for the region to upskill individuals on the requirements of keeping their back yards and orchards tidy, healthy and fruit fly free. There were no suitable trainers in the Hay region to organise and present at the workshop.

The solution

The coordinator has been working to develop networks with groups within the community to assist in structuring and running workshops through their organisations. The tree pruning workshop idea was proposed to the local Country Women’s Association branch in Hay where they decided to take on the task of hosting the workshop. Through a $2000 community pop-up grant and partnership with the local Landcare group the workshop was able to source a Trainer through Riverina TAFE so that participants could gain an attainment for their work. A local private orchard of a CWA member was marked as the training location and equipment was supplied through the grant.  Resource material for fruit fly was sourced through Riverina LLS for participants to take home.

The impact

A workshop was run on a weekend with 19 attendees and a trainer. The workshop covered all aspects of pruning from using the correct equipment to maintenance of equipment, tree stages of growth, diseases, grafting, fruiting buds and pruning styles. CWA have requested to continue the partnership with the local Landcare coordinator for future activities, workshops and projects.
