The issue

Giant parramatta grass is a major issue in the Nambucca Valley, and here at the NVL office, we get lots of inquiries about it and other pasture weeds like fireweed and cuphea. Effective weed management on pastures requires an integrated approach, and we recognised the need to provide an interactive educational event not only on weeds and their control methods, but also the role grazing management and soil health have in maintaining productive pastures.

The solution

Together with funding from DPI MEPAAW project and Landcare NSW, NVL used giant parramatta grass as the 'hook' to draw in participants for a workshop focused on pasture and priority environmental weeds, grazing management and soil health more broadly.

We had a great roll-up for our Pasture Weeds Workshop at Argents Hill, with 40 participants. Barry Powell, former Coffs Harbour Council Weeds Officer, Pia Dollman, Coffs Harbour Regional Landcare Coordinator and Jeremy Bradley, soil health expert and producer of "Soil Trooper", shared their extensive knowledge and experience with attendees. Who could forget the 'stubby bottle' method for assessing when your pasture is ready for a rest from grazing?

The impact

Participants provided very positive feedback on the event. One farmer reckoned: "Well done! Highly informative, great local applications, highly appropriate and timely. As always these presentations are educational and very useful. Excellent workshop." We couldn't agree more.
