Namoi Creek Clean Up

Rubbish removal from creek and along banks

Community Participation - LEP_13_LLCNYL_01

The issue

Rubbish accumulation alongside and in the Namoi Creek attributed to general littering, blown in from open areas and carried downstream in the creek.

The solution

The Namoi Dragon boat Club noticed whilst paddling in the Namoi Creek that there was a lot of rubbish which had entered the creek and was getting caught up in the vegetation on the banks. This was creating potential hazards for the wildlife who live and feed in the area.

The event was registered with Clean Up Australia who provided bags and gloves. Narrabri Bunnings donated equipment to aid with picking up of the rubbish and Northern Slopes Landcare Association provided  food for a BBQ , which was cooked by Wee Waa Rotaract Club on their BBQ trailer.

The event included participants walking the banks of the creek collecting rubbish and members of the Namoi Dragon Boat Club collecting rubbish from within the creek.

The impact

Several bags of rubbish were collected. Items included old clothing, cans, bottles, fast food wrappings, fishing lines, fishing rods, shopping trolleys, plastic bags and cigarette butts.

This event was hosted by Northern Slopes Landcare Association in conjunction with the Namoi Dragon Boat Club and Wee Waa Rotaract Club. It allowed community groups from different towns to work together and helped foster future collaborations.

Clean Up events are now being planned to be a yearly occurrence and this event helped to promote that Narrabri now had a Local Landcare Coordinator.
