The issue

Copper in several forms is an essential fungicide used in most horticultural crops and a fundamental requirement in any spraying program.

With more than 50 copper products on the market, it is essential growers know how different formulations work and what best suits their crop, region and environmental conditions to optimise fungicidal value and minimise environmental impact.

The solution

Central Coast Farmers engaged presenter, Hamish Turner, to deliver training about copper fungicides.  Hamish is a leading pesticide expert and has a wealth of knowledge and experience having worked for over 40 years as a technical manager and product developer of copper fungicidal products.  Hamish has specialised knowledge in disease management for horticultural crops and experience working in every state and horticultural region in Australia.

Topics included:

  • Differences between different copper formulations
  • How each formulation works
  • Modes of action
  • Rate responses
  • Anticipating disease pressure
  • Selecting the right formulation for your crop, growth stage, season and regional conditions.

The impact

The workshop was attended by 15 growers who enthusiastically participated. The material presented by Hamish was highly practical, detailed where necessary and showcased his extensive knowledge.   There were many useful tips for growers along with moments of realisation.

The feedback expressed about the workshop and Hamish’s expertise was excellent.

“Our time is always precious and I thought it was very well spent attending the workshop,” Kulnura grower, Lorraine Wilson said. “Hamish was an excellent presenter.”
