The issue

There is a growing need for increased environmental awareness and hands-on engagement among young students. Research shows that young people are increasingly worried about climate change, with little power to change it they are particularly vulnerably to climate related distress and anxiety. Youth engagement is critical for the development and continuance of ecological restoration.

The solution

Richmond Landcare teamed up with Alstonville High School to transform Bulwinkel Park into a hub of environmental action and learning, bringing together over 100 eager Year 8 students for a day of education and hands-on activities. This event was powered by the collective efforts of Bulwinkel Park Landcare, Ballina Shire Council, Big Scrub Bush Regen, Tuckombil Landcare, Ozfish, BirdLife, Alstonville/Maguires Creek Landcare, showcasing the power of community collaboration and environmental stewardship.

The event aimed to tackle the growing disconnect between students and their natural surroundings. This activity fostered a sense of environmental stewardship and highlighted practical ways to contribute to ecological health and sustainability.

The impact

The collaborative nature of this event with multiple stakeholders, made it a resounding success. There was a high level of engagement from students across the board. The overwhelming participation and enthusiasm from the students underscored the importance of enabling and empowering our young people to help restore our local environment.
