Growing Local Leaders for Land and People
In late 2024, following the 10-year anniversary of the South East Local Leaders Program, the training and delivery team undertook an adaptive review of the program. This process informed improvements to the delivery of the 2025 program including increased content continuity and strengthening communication and connections within the cohort post-program graduation.

The issue
People are at the heart of thriving landscapes, and across South East NSW, local leaders are stepping up to reimagine and renew their communities from within. In response to the challenges of drought, bushfires, and floods, the South East Local Leaders program — a collaboration between Global Learning, Landcare, and Local Land Services — has emerged as a powerful catalyst, driving grassroots change and resilience through a dynamic leadership development approach that empowers communities to lead their own renewal.
The solution
Through a series of immersive residential workshops, coaching sessions and peer-led activities, participants explored practical tools for inclusive leadership, community facilitation, team building, and conflict resolution. The program is delivered through a strong partnership between South East Landcare and South East Local Land Services, with expert facilitation from Global Learning. Since 2021, the support and coordination provided by staff from both organisations has helped shape a positive and practical learning experience for participants. This program is proudly funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by South East Local Land Services, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
The impact
At the core of the program is a focus on self-awareness, social intelligence, and building the confidence to lead with clarity and compassion. A significant highlight of the program is the ongoing participation of the Walbunja Rangers and the strong involvement of Indigenous leaders. Their cultural knowledge, land stewardship wisdom, and leadership perspectives have not only enriched the learning experience for all participants but have also modelled culturally inclusive and community-rooted leadership practices. This collaboration reflects a deep respect for Country, people, and the interwoven relationships that sustain healthy communities and landscapes.
Learnings
2025 is the third consecutive cohort with Walbunja ranger participants. Benefits have been evident at individual, group, community and partnership levels with relationships and trust established and strengthened. The presence and contribution from the rangers has consistently offered a diversity of perspectives with cultural connection.
