The issue
Landholders often lack clear guidance on the appropriate protocols to follow when Aboriginal cultural artefacts are discovered on private property. This uncertainty can lead to unintentional mishandling, delays in reporting, or missed opportunities to protect significant cultural heritage. Strengthening communication, education, and support for landholders is essential to ensure that discoveries are managed respectfully, lawfully, and in partnership with the relevant Aboriginal knowledge holders and authorities.
The solution
South East Landcare has partnered with Local Land Services Aboriginal Community Support Officer Rodney Freeman to deliver cultural awareness workshops across the region. Using virtual reality headsets participants were able to step into four significant sites across NSW, exploring in rich detail how they were created, their cultural importance, and how they can be protected for future generations.
The impact
As Rodney shared, Aboriginal cultural history is there to be appreciated, shared, and woven into our connection with Country for everyone to learn from and share with their families as a part of a continuing story. This collaboration reflects a deep respect for Country, people, and the interwoven relationships that sustain healthy communities and landscapes.
Learnings
There are significant opportunities for Landcare to bring landholders together to build their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultural heritage. Facilitated engagement can help dispel common myths and concerns, increase confidence in knowing what to do when artefacts are found, and strengthen respectful relationships with Aboriginal communities.
