The issue

The world is becoming increasingly complex, highlighting the importance of self-leadership and community leadership. This program helps build local democracy and relationships based on mutual reliance and cooperation, crucial for navigating future challenges.

The South East Local Leaders Program is a rural leadership development initiative aimed at enhancing leadership capacity within community, industry, and government sectors. This initiative is particularly focused on resilience and sustainability, targeting individuals involved in projects that promote sustainable agriculture, climate-smart practices, environmental conservation, and biodiversity.

The solution

The program is strategically designed to cater to the needs of the South East Local Land Services region in NSW. It has been co-designed & supported by South East Local Land Services and South East Landcare for over 10 years.

With the facilitators from Global Learning , the program has evolved, integrating new tools and methodologies to meet the diverse needs of its participants. Participants were engaged in three residential workshops held in picturesque locations, enhancing the learning experience through immersion in nature. These settings not only provide a peaceful retreat but also underscore the program's emphasis on the natural world as a partner in leadership development.

The impact

As the program continues to grow, it remains dedicated to investing in both the ecological and social infrastructure of communities. With a participant-centered approach, the program emphasizes inclusivity and generative learning, valuing the wisdom and contributions of all attendees.

One of the facilitators, Steve Colman stressed the program's long-term benefits. “This program helps build local democracy and relationships based on mutual reliance and cooperation, crucial for navigating future challenges."

Mark Spain emphasized managing personal challenges and fostering authentic connections: "Participants learn to handle their own drama and chaos, creating groundedness and presence. This enables them to communicate effectively, build relationships, and attract others to their way of leading."

Learnings

This milestone year of the South East Local Leaders Program not only celebrates a decade of achievement but also looks forward to continuing its legacy of nurturing capable, resilient leaders ready to tackle the challenges of the future.
