Landcare Trivia Night

A fun, engaging community trivia night celebrating Landcare achievements and nature knowledge.

The issue

Our group identified a need to bring members together in a relaxed, social setting that also helped strengthen environmental knowledge and encourage new participation. After a busy year of projects and events, we wanted an activity that both celebrated our achievements and fostered a stronger sense of connection within the Landcare community. We also hoped to engage new people who were curious about Landcare but had not yet attended an event.

The solution

We organised a Landcare-themed Trivia Night tailored to nature, biodiversity, local species, and our own TRLA projects. The event was promoted through our networks and open to both members and the wider community. Questions were designed to be fun, educational, and conversation-starting. We used low-cost resources to keep the event accessible. The night created a welcoming, informal atmosphere where people could learn, laugh, and connect.

The impact

The Trivia Night attracted 48 participants, including existing members and new community faces, making it one of our strongest social engagement activities of the year. It boosted awareness of local environmental issues, celebrated our collective achievements, and strengthened relationships across the Landcare network. Attendees reported feeling more connected and more confident in their nature knowledge. Several new participants expressed interest in joining future Landcare activities, demonstrating the event’s success as a community-building and capacity-building tool.

Learnings

The themed trivia format worked extremely well as a way to blend education with fun. It encouraged participation from people who may not usually attend workshops or field days. Ensuring a good mix of easy and challenging questions helped keep the night enjoyable for all ages. In future, we could include a short “Landcare update” segment or display information about upcoming projects to further increase engagement and volunteer interest.
