Local Native Planting Guide for Upper Lachlan

Producing a Local Native Planting Guide to support the Upper Lachlan community as they undertake revegetation projects.

The issue

Upper Lachlan Landcare was lacking a single, comprehensive reference point to support people who were seeking to undertake native revegetation projects. We received regular enquiries from people wanting to source tubestock, understand what species were suited to their area and gain local insights into successful native plant establishment.

Upper Lachlan Landcare had recently formed a sub-committee called the ‘Connectivity Crew’ and they were keen to communicate the connection between revegetating with local endemic species and the re-establishment of native animal habitat.

The solution

Upper Lachlan Landcare employed the knowledge, experience and skill of local landholders who had successfully undertaken revegetation projects. We reached out to our community and asked for their support and input into our Local Native Planting Guide.

Landholders who answered the call were able to share their insights and expertise in regard to planning, site preparation, planting technique and follow up care. All from the perspective of projects that had been successful locally, taking into account our local soils, terrain, altitudes and climate.

The impact

We launched the booklet at our November Landcare Member Meeting and invited guest speakers who had contributed content to the Guide. As well as our funding partner, the Biala Wind Farm. Members are delighted to have such a valuable local resource, that is locally relevant and includes listings such as local suppliers and a species guide. New contacts to Upper Lachlan Landcare are grateful to have access to such a comprehensive resource and straight away appreciate the value of a local grass-roots organisation like Landcare.
