Watershed Landcare Inc. is excited to announce that we are organising and hosting our 7th annual Green Day environmental expo. Green Day is targeted at year 5 and 6 students from the Mid-Western Regional Council area and beyond. This year, Green Day is being held on Thursday 10th September 2015 at Mudgee Showground.

To celebrate the United Nations 2015 Year of the Soil, our theme this year is Digging Deeper, where we’re going to learn everything about soils.

Who’s coming and what we’ll do?

Watershed Landcare have invited popular science educators Fizzics to deliver the keynote presentation to the students. You can find more information about Fizzics at their website.

In addition to a keynote speaker, students are lucky to attend an additional four workshops from a rage of local businesses that provide this support in-kind. Presenters this year are from NSW Local Land Services – Central West, Red Hill Environment Centre, Royal Agricultural Society, Niche Environment and Heritage, Bunnings, Di Lusso Estate, Crave Natural and Low Impact Lifestyles.

Aims of Green Day

The aim of Green Day is to provide a positive event where approximately 650-700 students, from 19 schools, have the opportunity to learn about various environmental topics. Green Day is also an opportunity for students to learn about various organisations and businesses and their roles in environmental management. Each year Green Day has a different theme, and a special guest presenter. This year’s theme is "Digging Deeper".

Green Day also aims to continue to be a fully subsidised event so that everyone has the opportunity to attend. Because of this teachers have stated Green Day is the only excursion some students are able to participate in.

Sculpture Competition

Watershed Landcare encourages schools and students to start thinking about Green Day a few months ahead, by holding a competition. The winner of the competition receives a prize for either the class, or school. To celebrate the International Year of Soils we are holding the Soil Sculpture Competition. Students have been asked to investigate the importance of soils and turn this into a sculpture to be exhibited at the Sculptures in the Garden Exhibition at Rosby. Click here for details.
