Spring is the season when birds are most lively and visible and getting involved in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is a great way to learn more about the feathered inhabitants of your neighbourhood.

BirdLife Australia and it's Birds in Backyards program have created the Aussie Backyard Bird Count initiative to provide an important snapshot of the birds that live where people live.

The event was launched in 2014 and over 800,000 birds were counted in backyards, local parks and school yards across Australia. The goal this year is to count one million birds in 7 days.

2015 Aussie Backyard Bird Count runs from 19-25 October so this weekend is you last chance to participate.

It’s easy to get involved. You can:

  • Register your interest as a Counter now through the website: http://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ (the website also contains some handy tips for designing a bird friendly garden)

  • If you already have an Aussie Bird Count app from last year, don’t delete it! An update is available today

  • If you don’t have the app and you have an Iphone/Ipad or Android, head to the Google Play or ITunes app store and download the free Aussie Bird Count app

  • Join the #AussieBirdCount conversation on social media

So register as a counter and head out into the backyard, local park or your favourite green space and get counting!

It only takes 20 minutes and it's a great activity to do with the family or a group of friends. There's even a Field Guide built into the app to help you identify birds you're not familiar with.
