How would you like to spend the day in a little patch of wilderness a stone's throw from the centre of Mudgee?

The Friends of the Putta Bucca Wetlands would like to invite you to help with their big tree planting day on Saturday 9 May.

The Putta Bucca Wetlands reserve is situated on the site of an abandoned aggregate quarry. The site was opened to the public in 2011 and since that time has been undergoing extensive restoration and rehabilitation works.

The wetland now boasts a multitude of birdlife, as well as many frog, fish, reptile and mammal species.

The Friends of the Putta Bucca Wetlands are now implementing the next stage of rehabilitation works at the site.

“We will be planting around 400 she oaks and red gums along the northern boundary of the site.” said Kurtis Lindsay, secretary of the Friends of the Putta Bucca Wetlands.

“This planting will provide a screen, act as a windbreak and provide a corridor from the existing vegetation of the wetland to the proposed grassy box woodland planting site.” he continued.

The she oaks and red gums were the endemic vegetation along the Cudgegong River riparian corridor and provide passage for small birds, such as honey eaters. Once the trees attain size they will also provide valuable roosting sites for the water birds.

“It would be great to get as much assistance as we can, there are a lot of trees to put in and we would like to get through the planting in one day.” said Kurtis.

Members of the Friends of Putta Bucca Wetlands will be on hand to answer any questions about the site and even help you identify some birds.

If you'd like to be involved please bring your own digging tools, plus hats, water, sunscreen etc. Kids are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

Start time is flexible, as the planting will take most of the day.

If you'd like to get involved please RSVP to Wendy Arnott, wendya@winsoft.net.au.

This event is supported by the Friends of Putta Bucca Wetland and Watershed Landcare through funding from Mid-Western Regional Council.
