The issue

In an increasingly fast-paced and technology-driven world, people are experiencing growing levels of stress, anxiety, and disconnection from the natural environment.

Rural communities in particular face challenges of social isolation due to changing lifestyles and pressures.

The solution

West Hume Landcare, in partnership with the Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre, launched the Grassy Woodlands Nature Journaling Group as a community-based initiative.

Every two months, the group gathers to explore and record the natural world - either in the stunning native gardens and bushland of Wirraminna at Burrumbuttock, or on excursions further afield. It's the perfect opportunity to slow down, observe closely, and truly connect with your surroundings.

Participants range from curious beginners to those seeking artistic growth, improved mindfulness, or better observational skills. The group welcomes all and celebrates everyone’s efforts.

Using a mix of drawing, writing, photography and data collection, participants engage deeply with the natural world, guided by the principles of nature journaling. The group setting provides a shared sense of purpose and fosters inspiration through community connection.

The impact

The Group has fostered a welcoming and inclusive environment that supports mental wellbeing, creativity, and ecological awareness. The initiative has also strengthened community ties, offering a low-barrier activity that combines creativity, mindfulness, and environmental stewardship.

The Grassy Woodlands Nature Journaling Group is a model of how simple, nature-based practices can address complex social and emotional challenges. By fostering mindful engagement with the natural world, the initiative supports individual well-being while strengthening community and environmental awareness.
