Refresh Replenish Re-engage - augmented habitat for Squirrel gliders
2024 Lake Hume Squirrel glider nest box maintenance

The issue
Community volunteers from Friends of Lake Hume Squirrel gliders and Woolshed Thurgoona Landcare Group worked with Parklands Albury Wodonga, Thurgoona Men's Shed and our Local Landcare Coordinator to deliver the 2024 Lake Hume Squirrel glider nest box maintenance program from May 2024 to May 2025. Our project installed, repaired or replaced 163 nest boxes around Lake Hume Village and Thurgoona, east of Albury, to help Squirrel gliders and directly engage the community with native species.
The solution
The first nest boxes around Lake Hume village were installed in 2006, with others added or removed due to damage or development over the years. At the start of this maintenance program there were 43 boxes across that subset. Some of the boxes were reaching the end of their useful life and needed replacing, some needed maintenance, and all boxes needed their box identifier redone. A general refresh was also needed of the mapping, data systems and engagement. There are now 55 boxes at Lake Hume on private and public land. We also took the opportunity to do repair works on other boxes across our district.
Maintaining nest boxes is expensive in both money, planning and time but it is a highly visible declaration of our commitment to eco-friendly initiatives for the preservation of biodiversity. It is also very rewarding especially when we see native species using the boxes and better yet, building up their populations. We also monitored 383 boxes, recording 155 Squirrel gliders over the 12 months. Other tasks included adding an extra 44 private boxes into the dataset, changing box position for better shade in summer, holding a community information event to report the project outcomes, and training more volunteers in nest box monitoring.
The impact
Being part of a nest box monitoring and maintenance program creates a connection between nature, volunteers, the landcare group executive committee, the land managers and owners and environmental specialists like landcare coordinators, ecologists, nature enthusiasts and farmers. There are lots of separate jobs needed so there is something for everyone. Over the project, 37 volunteers contributed 310 hours of their time and activated a wide variety of skills.
The project was funded through the 2023/2024 AlburyCity Land Management Incentive Program (Round 2). A well looked-after nest box housing portfolio promotes an 'Enhanced Natural Environment' and 'A Caring Community' supporting themes of the Albury 2050 Community Strategic Plan.
