Regional Roundup magazine 2023

The Regional Roundup Magazine aims to showcase the valuable activities and projects conducted by various groups across the Murray region, including YACTAC, in the fields of agriculture and Landcare. It serves as a celebration of their identity, purpose and exemplifies the diverse, important and successful initiatives they carry out throughout the region, contributing to agricultural practice change and natural resource management.

Refreshing Central Billabong Waterway Management Plan 2023

Refreshing Central Billabong Waterway Management Plan builds and expands upon YACTAC's Strategic Plan 2020-30 to cover a broader area. Refreshing Central Billabong will support delivering a range of initiatives over 10 years and beyond to improve waterway health outcomes.

Report 1 ROAR

YACTAC in collaboration with the Refreshing Rivers Program, community, local landholders and government are actively supporting the recovery of native fish populations in the Central Billabong system. One initiative is targeting of carp in different areas of the Central Billabong system using an experimental approach to assess if localised removal of carp is effective in reducing numbers of carp (especially large carp) temporarily. If successful and conducted in a strategic manner, localised initiatives like this could be initiated in sections where native fish breeding has been identified, threatened species are released (e.g. catfish), or emergent-submergent vegetation is being established.

Report 2 ROAR

This second report builds on the first with several recommendations including: • Continue carp removal with monitoring to assess benefits to native fish establishment • Prioritise emergent/submergent revegetation • Catfish re-establishment program • Continue golden perch stocking program between Wanganella and Jerilderie • Silver perch re-establishment program YACTAC are working on re-establishing catfish in 2024 and the pilot program of planting submerged plants (November 2023), such as tall spike rush, is looking fantastic – see the photos on the last page of the report.
