The Werrpanakata Lagoon project, is part of the overall plan being developed in partnership with the general community, Murray LLS, Edward Wakool Angling Association, Edward River Council, the Rice Growers Association, the Deniliquin High School and Yarkuwa, to develop Community outdoor educational facilities to learn about native fish and their habitat, the importance of wetlands in the local Indigenous community.

The issue

The Deniliquin lagoon system is a residual lagoon system that runs through Deniliquin, and is the remains from areas of reclaimed swampy land within the town. In some areas, the lagoons had become difficult to maintain, other issues include exotic plants and European carp and  reduced water quality. One of the Lagoons has been developed as the Werrpanakata Fish Park.

The solution

The Deniliquin Lagoon Steering Committee had been formed to develop a plan to implement a lagoon rehabilitation strategy. The Werrpanakata Lagoon project, is part of the overall plan being developed in partnership with the general community, Murray LLS, Edward Wakool Angling Association, Edward River Council, the Rice Growers Association, the Deniliquin High School and Yarkuwa, to develop Community outdoor educational facilities to learn about native fish and their habitat, the importance of wetlands in the local Indigenous community.

This project is built on all parties working together, on planning and implementation, contributing financial and in kind support. A working group has been formed with the Deniliquin High school, who carryout regular maintenance work in the park and build fishing platforms.

The impact

Ensures the long term management and maintenance of the Lagoon system, The Deniliquin Lagoon Landcare Group will be formed to provide ongoing maintenance of the Lagoon system and continue to work with Edward River Council as the land manager.
