Celebrating Biodiversity Month Across the Central Tablelands
September is Biodiversity Month – a chance for us all to celebrate and care for the incredible diversity of plants, animals, and landscapes that make the Central Tablelands such a unique place to live. Our region is home to endangered species like the Regent Honeyeater, Superb Parrot, and the Purple Copper Butterfly, as well as threatened ecosystems including Box Gum Grassy Woodlands and Snow Gum Woodlands.
Protecting and restoring the unique environments of the Central Tablelands is about much more than looking after plants and animals – it’s about safeguarding the very systems that sustain us all. Healthy landscapes provide clean water for our towns and farms, fertile soils for growing food, pollinators to keep our orchards and gardens thriving, and natural spaces that nurture our wellbeing. When we care for biodiversity, we are also investing in our own health, livelihoods, and community resilience.
Here in the Central Tablelands, biodiversity is a regional priority. Our creeks, wetlands, grasslands, and forests are home to some of Australia’s rarest species, including the Superb Parrot, Regent Honeyeater, Purple Copper Butterfly, and the endangered Bathurst Grassland Earless Dragon. These species are not only ecologically important, but they are also part of what makes our region such a rich and vibrant place to live. By protecting their habitats and restoring ecosystems, we help ensure that future generations inherit landscapes that are alive with birdsong, buzzing pollinators, and thriving native plants.
But biodiversity isn’t something that can be safeguarded by one group alone. It’s a shared responsibility. Farmers, families, schools, volunteers, and local organisations all play a role in maintaining the health of our environment. Every weed pulled, every tree planted, every frog call recorded, and every conversation about sustainability contributes to the bigger picture of a resilient and thriving Central Tablelands.
This Biodiversity Month, we invite you to take part in the many events happening across our region. Whether you’re lending a hand at a community planting day, joining an evening spotlight walk to discover nocturnal wildlife, or celebrating 17 years of Green Day, your involvement helps strengthen our connection to the land and each other.
Together, we can protect what makes the Central Tablelands so special.
