Boomerang Bags - Tackling Plastic Pollution

Tackling plastic Pollution at a grass roots level.

- LEP23-005-Condo-05_LLC_005

The issue

Our Boomerang Bag group was created with a large group of local communities to take action against plastic pollution and to bring the subject of recycling to the forefront in our communities.

Every day the equivalent of 2000 garbage trucks full of plastics are dumped into the world's oceans, rivers and lakes. Plastic pollution has the following effects on the environment around us.

Chokes marine wildlife

Damages soil

Poisons Groundwater

Causes serious health impacts on both animals and humans

Instead of people opting for the usual plastic bag our community group wanted a way to provide a safer solution for the environment.

The solution

Our dedicated local group of volunteers get together regularly to make quality re-usable bags. Local women have the opportunity to donate recycled material they no longer want or need as a means to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic.

The Boomerang Bag Groups main aim is to reduce plastic consumption, promote up cycling of materials and build community networks and relationships in our local area.

The impact

Through our regular Boomerang Bags sewing bees' conversations are started and friendships are made, and our volunteers are all working towards a common goal to reduce the amount of plastic used. Having our regular sewing bees to create bags has fostered significant behavioral change in the community.

Learnings

We rely on the willingness and generosity of people in the community to help us do something about reducing plastic waste in our region.

Where to find our Boomerang Bags

Boomerang bags can be purchased at our local Lachan Shire Library and Western Regional Service for $4.00
