Montane Peatlands

Exploring and discussing a unique endangered Peatland in the South West Slopes

Self sustenance - LEP_23-020_LLC04

The issue

Peatlands are critical ecosystems found on the southwestern slopes of New South Wales. Unfortunately, these unique landscapes are facing severe threats, pushing them towards potential extinction.  The day at McPherson's Plains in the Tumbarumba area gave us the opportunity to learn about  programs that support and reward environmental stewardship and a talk with landholders with agreements, about how they work, and who to contact.

The solution

Landcare NSW and the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust are working together to raise awareness and support private land conservation efforts across the state.

Walking through these wetlands, one can appreciate the continuous carpet of sphagnum moss, shrublands, wild orchids and endemic plant communities.  Sphagnum moss plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration, water retention, and habitat provision for various species. A guided tour, from Landholders, discussed their strategies for integrating sphagnum moss conservation into land management practices, ensuring sustainable land use that supports both long-term biodiversity.

The impact

Coupled with a sit-down lunch and presentation, the day provided an opportunity for landholders to voice their experiences and ask questions regarding local biodiversity'  Landholders discussed the balance between personal conservation goals alongside neighbours with differing agricultural land management practices.

Learnings

BCT reinforced the importance of collaborative conservation efforts. Learning about sphagnum moss, the role of BCT agreements and the appreciation for the complexities of environmental stewardship. While challenges exist, it demonstrates that with the right partnerships and adaptive management, significant progress can be made in protecting biodiversity for future generations.

Awareness raising is essential for future generations

The peatlands situated on the southwestern slopes are treasures of our natural world, playing an essential role in climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and water management.  It becomes increasingly clear that action must be taken to protect these endangered ecosystems from extinction.
