Community Participation - LP049-009
The issue
Publishing articles in local newspapers is a great way to communicate Landcare activities in small towns. Following a very successful excursion when students from St Joseph's Primary School in Hillston joined students from St Francis Xavier's School in Lake Cargelligo to monitor fish and birds, articles were published in both the Hillston and Ivanhoe Spectator and The Lake News.
The solution
The articles featured photographs of the students sorting aquatic samples and described some of the species that were found. They also described the process of euthanasing pest species such as carp humanely using an anaesthetic made from clove oil.
The impact
The students learnt about the Lachlan catchment, the Lake Cargelligo system and the plants and animals that live locally. By publishing the articles their work will be appreciated by their communities.
