Streamwatch in Schools
Developing a Streamwatch program to connect students with water quality monitoring and citizen science in the Parramatta River catchment.

The issue
Many students living within the Parramatta River catchment have limited opportunities to participate in practical environmental monitoring. Schools often require support, equipment and partnerships to deliver meaningful field-based learning that connects students with local waterways and environmental stewardship.
The solution
Parramatta River Catchment Group (PRGC) partnered with The Harbour School Sydney to establish a Streamwatch program using the NSW Streamwatch methodology and Atlas of Living Australia. Planning included access to monitoring equipment, development of field activities and exploration of a partnership with CSIRO to expand participation and reduce barriers for schools.
The impact
The project established the foundations for a school-based Streamwatch program in the Parramatta River catchment. It strengthened partnerships between education and environmental organisations and created opportunities for students to participate in citizen science and water quality monitoring.
Future Directions
The program will commence with participating schools and continue to expand through additional partnerships, giving more students opportunities to monitor local waterways and contribute to citizen science.
