The issue

Young children love to explore nature! Providing them with the chance to learn more about the importance of natural habitats for native wildlife species in our local area creates an abundance of further learning opportunities, and highlights the significance of why we need to protect our local wildlife species and the habitats they live in. It is widely known that younger children are likely to enthusiastically engage with animals, especially when they are the furry and cute kind! Allowing children to get up close with a native animal in a safe and controlled environment and sharing knowledge with our future environmental caretakers, provided a great engagement and educational opportunity for the children at a local primary school.

The solution

On Wednesday 15th December 2021, Local Landcare Coordinator Stacey engaged with the infant class at Barham Public School and took along with her 'Mem' her orphan rescue Brushtail Possum currently in care and being rehabilitated to be released back into the local environment. This was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to get up close with Mem, ask questions, take part in some Q&A and receive some handouts highlighting the diets, common traits and local habitats of Brushtail Possums. The kids also received a copy of the well-known Australian classic book 'Possum Magic' by Mem Fox.

The impact

Eighteen infants students joined in the class visit and enthusiastically observed Mem and learned about nocturnal Marsupials, where they live, what they eat, and what to do if they ever find one that needs help. The children were able to partake in a book reading of Possum Magic to further engage them. They also completed some colouring in activities and took home a learning sheet all about Brushtail Possums. It was a wonderful, light-hearted visit that was enjoyed by all.
