Event Recap: Soil's Alive with Mid Lachlan Landcare

Mid Lachlan Landcare's "Soil's Alive - What is the Ideal Fungi: Bacteria Ratio" workshop welcomed 45 enthusiastic participants from across the region, all eager to learn more about their soils and the biodiversity below. The workshop was a resounding success, gathering fascinating information from 28 sites, with over 100 Microbiometer tests conducted on both public land and private farms across the Mid Lachlan Region.

The Central Tablelands Regional Landcare Network, in partnership with the Odonata Foundation, has conducted the Great Australian Wildlife Search using eDNA techniques to explore biodiversity across 18 diverse sites, uncovering significant findings including the presence of platypus and the invasive European carp. These insights highlight the urgent need for conservation efforts, which are supported through community-driven initiatives like 'Carp Blitzes' and strategic habitat management.

Southern Highlands Koala Conservation Project (SHKCP) planting day

Thanks to the help of the University of Technology's 'The Big Lift' and a band of local volunteers, SHLN had a very successful planting day on Saturday 13th April. It was a delight to work with such an enthusiastic group of people. The students were a joy. They discussed the importance of community and taking action to support their beliefs about climate change while they worked and seemed to really enjoy the opportunity to be with us. None of this would have been possible without the SHKCP led by Casey Taylor at Wingecarribee Shire Council. Casey provided plants and contractors to dig holes as well as do following up watering.

Launch of Landcare's Helping Hands

Land for Wildlife (LFW) property owners are into conservation and revegetation but they are often alone in their endeavours. Once a planting is finished they can be overwhelmed by maintenance and weed problems. Landcare's helping hands aims to help landowners with projects that are too big for the individual to handle and too small for contractors. We also advise on weed management, suggest contractors and assist with grants.

Junior Landcare - Exeter Public School

Southern Highlands Landcare Network are working with teacher Wade, Lindsay the general assistant and a group of year 2-3 students to create a butterfly garden outside their class room. While the concept of weeding was a bit of challenge the students loved mulching, finding worms and other invertebrates. The highlight of the day was finding some frog eggs. Don't worry we left them undisturbed and moved to another area. We will be finding the best way forward to ensure we don't disturb frog habitat.
