Sutton Primary School

Sutton Landcare Group will again meet at Sutton Public School on Tuesday 9 April 2019 at 7.30pm. Our guest speaker will be Dr Michael Mulvaney, who will provide an overview and update of the Canberra Nature Map (CNM). ‘In my other life I provide biodiversity advice to the ACT Government. Canberra Nature Map and the sightings that you all are generously recording is making my job easier and focusing conservation protection and management where it needs to be.’ Michael Mulvaney, CNM. Michael will talk about the beginnings of CNM when founder Aaron Clausen clumsily rode his mountain bike straight over of one of the last remaining colonies of the critically endangered Canberra Spider Orchid. Aaron then approached Michael to consider his citizen science idea. This was the beginning of the Canberra Nature Map. The building of CNM is a remarkable feat of cooperative effort, given the number of people involved, the volume of photos and other data, and the number of species it caters for. Membership is growing quickly. Currently there are about1900 members and 80 moderators. The number of people using the website continues to grow as well. As citizen science in action, it shows the value of a volunteer local website run by local people with local knowledge as part of a strong interactive community. From its very simple beginnings CNM has become a highly sophisticated and valuable wildlife mapping website and is a leader in this field. CNM now map the location and abundance of most types of wildlife in the Canberra region, in a way that is useful to science and researchers as well as easy and enjoyable for members. This is CNM’s basic purpose. Following the presentation, supper will be provided with an opportunity to talk further with Dr Mulvaney. For further information on Sutton Landcare Group, please contact our secretary on sutton.landcare@gmail.com.

Braidwood

The 2019 Two Fires Festival (2FF) will be celebrating Food Health and Healing the Land in Braidwood on Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of April. This family-friendly event is an opportunity to learn about and experience native and local food, art and literature, local activism, indigenous culture and regenerative farming. Since its beginning in 2005, the Two Fires Festival celebrates the work of a vigorous artistic community, and enlivens the creative force of activism. Arts and activism blend, each feeding the potency of the other. The Festival honours and carries forward the spirit of poet Judith Wright’s twin passions, art and activism, particularly environmental and Indigenous activism.

April 4 Thursday

04 Apr, 2019 from 07:30 PM to 09:00 PM

MLG Monthly Meeting 7.30 pm Thursday 4 April The natural history of the local goanna species and how to manage properties for their conservation. Who: Dr Don Fletcher has spoken to MLG on a previous occasion( about eastern grey kangaroos). Dr Fletcher has retired from ACT government and is now running a citizen science project on Rosenberg’s Goanna (aka Heath Monitor Varanus rosenbergi). He has a secret longing to also research the Tree Goanna (aka Lace Monitor Varanus varius), in part because of its paradoxical disappearance from parts of the region other than around Nanima, leaving only Rosenberg’s Goanna. The latter species is declared ‘Vulnerable’ in NSW, while the Tree Goanna is abundant along the eastern seaboard of Australia. Don has a PhD in wildlife population dynamics and has a background in pest management and threatened species management. When: 7.30 pm Thursday 4 April (note we will still be under daylight saving on the night) Where: the Murrumbateman Rec Hall (the pub is booked). RSVP: reply email please by 2 April ( and any special requests from those suffering from herpetophobia).
