Araluen Creek Flood Events 2020-2022

The Araluen Valley experienced approximately 19 flood events over three years after the 20219/20 bushfires. The table below outlines major rain events, where more than 50mm fell over consecutive days. These wet weather periods cause intense spikes in the Araluen Creek and the fast flowing floods exacerbated erosion issues.

Landcare Partnerships in Action – Community planting for Araluen Creek

Sunday 2 April saw an enthusiastic group gather along Araluen Creek for the Upper Shoalhaven Landcare Council and Upper Deua Catchment Landcare Group Community Planting Day. Four hundred trees, shrubs and grasses were planted, fertilised, staked, watered and protected with tree guards and weed mats. The restoration of the Wingecarribee River riparian zone is a major focus of the Southern Highland Landcare Network. Thanks to the work of Ian Royds and a large support team of volunteers a significant tree planting has been completed. The next challenge is to get other landholders on board so this vital work can expand along the river.

Apical Delivers final Weeds Workshop in Araluen Creek Series

In Landcare, we've seen that if we don’t deal with our weeds early, they can become entrenched and much harder to manage. It's therefore important to know what weed threats are emerging and the best ways to deal with them. To address this issue, on Saturday 25 February 2023, Upper Deua Catchment Landcare and USLC hosted their second workshop on practical weed control at the Araluen Campground. This workshop was the final instalment in the Araluen Creek Restoration series, bringing back weed expert Daniel Anderson of Apical and assistant Jake Proust. This time the focus was on an emergent creeper in the Valley - Madeira vine - as well as blackberry and invasive grasses.

Araluen Creek Restoration Project – Update October 2022

Woohoo we are almost ready to rock and roll on the big soil erosion works, the key part of the Araluen Creek Restoration Project! Rock, well we have about 460 tonnes of rock ready to be put in place. Roll, and yep we have to roll about 29 truck loads of root logs and quite a few tree trunks into place. Thankfully big machines will do this once the ground is dry enough. With modern day computer apps can we set the time lapse footage to some good old rock ‘n’ roll music. Interesting concept, looking for creative assistance.

Yanco Creek System Map

The footprint of the Yanco Creek System (YCS) follows the Yanco, Colombo and Forest Creeks, as well as the regulated section of the Billabong Creek (below Cocketegdong). The YCS commences at the confluence of the Murrumbidgee River and the Yanco Creek. The system runs in a westerly direction until the Billabong Creek flows into the Edward River. The system connects the Murrumbidgee River to the Murray River.
