Climate change in our region
Murrumbateman Landcare Group is a contributor to local initiatives aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change in our region. MLG was one of the organisers of a May 2018 forum on how land managers can contribute to limiting climate change and reap the benefits (Join the Climate Conversation: Rural Communities Making a Difference). MLG is also a core member of Yass Area Network’s Climate Ready Revegetation Project. This project aims to enhance the genetic diversity of selected local native plant species, so they are better able to adapt to climate change over time. It involves analysing the distribution of local species to assess whether they are likely to survive projected climate change, and then sourcing seed from a range of provenances. A trial comparing the survival of plants grown from local and non-local seed commenced in 2021. The first three years' data on survival rates were presented by the project officer, Sonya Duus, in February 2024.
